Did you know that most small business owners miss out on one of the easiest tools for growth? Blogging isn’t just for hobbyists when done right, it can seriously boost your business. It builds your audience, improves your website’s visibility on Google, and helps you stand out from the competition.
I’ve built my entire marketing career through blogging. Most of my customers find me through blog posts or word of mouth, and the best part is that if I can do this as a washed-up actor, you can too.
Why Should You Blog?
When you blog consistently and strategically, you get:
-
Content to share on social media
-
More traffic to your website
-
Better search engine rankings in your local area
That’s a huge win for your business, as it increases profit, competes with other local businesses and helps earn you money!
What’s the Goal of Your Blog?
Before you start writing, ask yourself:
-
Are you blogging for fun, business, or affiliate marketing?
-
Do you want more customers?
-
Are you trying to educate your audience?
-
Do you want to be seen as an expert?
Your goals will shape the direction of your content. In this video I’m going to go into the purpose behind setting up your blog to try and help you become a powerful force of nature online!
Keywords, Long-Tail Keywords & Trends
To get your blog found online, focus on three things: This focus will allow you to correctly direct your blog and make it a good source of traffic for your website, which will boost it’s ranking and help you become a powerhouse.
1. Keywords
These are the basic terms related to your business. For this blog, examples might be: blogging, writing, marketing.
2. Long-Tail Keywords
These are more specific phrases people actually search for, like “where to get garden gnomes in Ipswich.” (And yes, you can work that naturally into your blog.) So let’s use the example in a line for our blog. If you are wondering where to get garden gnomes in Ipswich, look no further than us! We have all the gnomes (keyword) that you could possibly need, including Garden Gnomes (Keyword) Gnomes that like to fish (Long tail keyword) and Deep Gnomes from the Underdark (Which will net in local DnD players! – We learned that the local area has several hidden Dungeons and Dragons group! Yea for market research!
3. Google Trends
Stuck for ideas? Use Google Trends to see what people are searching for right now. There are many other tools we can use, but Trends is easiest to access without sneaky payment walls.
How to Structure a Great Blog
Once you know your topic, and you’ve got a solid idea of what you’re going to be writing about follow these tips:
-
Aim for around 1500 words of useful content
-
Use simple, clear language
-
Outline your points before you write to stay on track
-
Make the experience enjoyable for your reader (You might notice I try to be personable and have a sense of humour even though I’m boring, dull and robotic in real life!)
Use Internal Linking
Once you’ve got a few blogs, link them to each other. For example, if I’ve written a blog about Yell’s marketing tactics, I’ll link to it naturally. Internal links help Google see your content as more valuable and they help your readers dive deeper into what you offer. Internal links are great, so you can for example link to your homepage from your blog like I just did. This is kind of like knitting, and if you’ve got a well knitted website, it won’t get cold in the winter!
Evergreen Content is King
“Evergreen” means content that stays relevant over time like how-to guides, tips, or service explanations. These posts can be shared again and again, always bringing in traffic. This blog is in itself evergreen content because it, like me will always be useful! (Sadly though I have an expiry date, but don’t tell my boss about that!)
Don’t Be Afraid to Reference Others
If you reference someone else’s content, it shows you’re paying attention to other sources and it’s a great excuse to connect. Just be sure to give proper credit. For example:
In his blog How to Spruce up Your Business, Alex says, “If you want to learn about marketing, subscribe to my YouTube channel where I share everything I know.”
Then add your own thoughts. It makes the blog more dynamic and gives you a chance to build relationships with your readers, productive ones, not ones where you have to take them out for dinner.
The Secret to Ranking Above #1 on Google
Here’s a cool trick: Use questions and answers in your blogs. This is how you can land in Google’s “Featured Snippet” box above all the regular search results. You don’t need to worry about the how and why, it just works, but not all the time.
Q: How can I appear above Rank 1 in Google?
A: Use clear, direct questions followed by useful answers. Just like this!

Collaborate With Other Bloggers
One of the fastest ways to grow is to build alliances. Reach out to other bloggers. Share each other’s content. Link to each other. It’s a win-win. Real relationships in the blogging world can take you far. They’ve taken me into great experiences which lead to the thing all Ferengi crave most – Profit!
